If you’ve heard of SEO experts tell you how important it is for your website, but you aren’t quite sure what hreflang means, read on.

You need to understand and implement hreflang, if you have a multilingual website i.e. it has content in more than one language.

Here, I have tried to explain the meaning of hreflang and why it is useful, in simple, layman terms.

What is hreflang?

An hreflang tag is an HTML attribute that you can use to tell search engines about your website’s language and the geographical location of your target audience.

How is hreflang useful for SEO?

Implementing hreflang tags helps search engines match your website with the right audience for the specified language and region.

Is hreflang the same as canonical? If not, what is the difference?

Canonical and hreflang tags are not the same.
Canonical tags : When there are more than one pages with similar content on a website, the canonical tag tells the search engines which one to pick.
Hreflang tags : The hreflang tag clearly specifies which page to show to a user from a specific country and for a specific language.

What is the difference between HTML lang and hreflang tags?

HTML lang tags let the browser know what language that page is in. Hreflang tags, on the other hand, let the search engines know which page to show to a user from a particular country and for a particular language.
